How KYC and Nomination Work for Mutual Fund Investors

How KYC and Nomination Work for Mutual Fund Investors

Two pieces of paperwork quietly determine how smoothly your mutual fund investing experience goes: KYC and nomination. Neither is glamorous, but both matter more than most investors initially realise.

KYC is a one-time, industry-wide process

Know Your Customer (KYC) verification is done once, through a SEBI-registered KYC Registration Agency (KRA), and is then valid across every AMC and intermediary in the mutual fund industry — you don't need to repeat it for each new fund house you invest with.

KYC typically requires PAN, a valid address proof, a photograph and in-person or video-based verification, depending on the mode chosen. You can check your current KYC status directly on a KRA's website, such as CVL KRA.

What can put your KYC "on hold"

  • An expired or mismatched address proof document.
  • PAN details that don't match your Aadhaar or other identity records exactly.
  • Incomplete video-KYC verification for schemes that require it.

A KYC marked "on hold" or "registered but not verified" can still let you invest in some cases but may restrict others — it's worth resolving fully rather than leaving it partially done.

Nomination: the paperwork nobody wants to think about

Nomination determines who is entitled to receive your mutual fund units in the event of your death, without requiring your legal heirs to go through a lengthy succession process for that specific investment. SEBI mandates that investors either provide a nomination or explicitly opt out of nomination in writing when opening a folio.

A few things worth checking on your own folios:

  • Is a nominee actually recorded, or did the folio get opened with an "opt-out" by default?
  • Are the nominee's name and relationship details current, especially after a marriage, birth, or other family change?
  • Have you nominated across all folios, not just the most recent one?

Both KYC and nomination are the kind of paperwork that only becomes urgent when it's suddenly needed — which is exactly why it's worth checking now, while there's no urgency at all.
